Risk Management by Design using the POPPIE method

We’ve delivered successful risk improvement programmes with Leaders like you, enabling them to focus on decisions and delivery. It all starts with a conversation about your programme and your vision

Pitch / Posture.

Set the tone.

Is Risk Management “another spreadsheet to fill in”?

Even if you employ a Risk Manager, it is the Leader who is accountable for managing risk and delivering benefits.

The Leader sets the “tone at the top” - this is a great opportunity to ask for what you want, establish psychological safety and sell the benefits of risk management to the team.

When it comes to your teams engagement in Risk Management, “you get what you pitch for, and you are always pitching.”

Create the foundations for success and get the team aligned…

Context is key.

Every team needs a map - where are we now and where are we going? What are the objectives, assumptions, constraints, drivers of complexity and other key features of the context and what difference will this make to the Programme Management process, governance and the way Risk Management is conducted?

In order to be useful in enabling your decisions and delivery success, Risk Management needs to be designed to work in the context of your programme! One size doesn’t fit all.

Create assets that clearly describe the context

Orientation.

Process.

“You don’t rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems.” *

Creating meaningful information and insights requires repeated habits and forcing functions that together make an effective system. Who does what, when, where and how to make this happen?

A Roles and Responsibilities framework is a must to ensure that the system works. If 3 people are responsible for feeding the dog, the dog will starve!

Design your system so that it answers your business questions and enables your decisions…

People.

There is a difference between “book-smarts” and “street-smarts”.

Skilled people make the process more effective and provide the insight to bring information to life. To make Risk Management useful, the team need to know their roles, develop real-world knowledge and skills and apply these in the context of the Programme.

You are not seeking to develop a team of certified Risk Management professionals. Mixed methods of training, briefing, coaching and feedback will develop a team that is fit for purpose, high-performing and able to learn from each other.

Develop your team to produce the insights you need for decisions and delivery…

Data must be standardised, visible and available to the right people at the right times.

Risk Management can be a victim of “Garbage in, Garbage out”. This isn’t just about software tools, but deliberate and effective use of the best tools at your disposal.

Efficiency of data collection is important, but it is trumped by effectiveness and usefulness in the context of the decisions and interventions that may be needed.

Determine a data and tools approach that enables relevant insights for your decisions…

Information.

“If Risk Management is the answer, what is the question?” *

Does your risk management information actually enable better situational awareness, evidence for decisions and insight for interventions? Is it too sparse, too vast or just answering the wrong questions? Is it available to the right people at the right time?

Management Information must be designed with the key questions and decisions in mind. It must be integrated with relevant information from other key processes (Eg. Finance) and be curated, consumable, and provide the desired insight.

This is where the rubber hits the road. Create management information that works for you!
